About our trainings

At Clear Language Lab, we offer a wide range of training options to bring plain language to your organization.

All training options are available in person or virtually. We have experience on many virtual platforms, including Zoom, Teams, and WebEx. We can provide customizations based on your organization’s unique needs and sector. We can even help you create a self-paced course for your organization’s own learning management system.

Engagement

We know learning happens best through practice. We use tools like discussion questions, quizzes + polls, whiteboards, and small groups to actively engage participants. We use real-world examples throughout our trainings to illustrate plain language strategies in practice.

Accessibility

We strive to make our trainings as accessible as possible. We run all training materials through accessibility checkers and share content in advance. We use auto-generated captions in virtual trainings. Training sessions longer than 90 minutes include a break. If there are other things we can do to meet your accessibility needs, please let us know.

Cost

The base costs below are a starting point. As a small nonprofit, we understand what it means to work with limited funds. We offer discounts for small nonprofits and Literacy Works members. If you have a limited budget, please let us know on the form below and we’ll do our best to work with you. We will also factor in a discount of 20% when scheduling multiple trainings at the same time.

Additional fees apply for training recording, in-person delivery, customizations and sessions less than 6 weeks away. We will send you a quote based on your needs after you submit the form at the bottom of this page.

Plain language foundations: webinars and presentations

These trainings are:

60-90 minute presentations
Virtual webinars or in-person presentations
Great for groups of any size

This 1-hour session introduces participants to strategies for sharing numbers effectively. We share tips for writing about data, charts, and money in a meaningful way and how to support folks who might struggle with everyday math tasks.

This training is best for: folks who are new to plain language and whose work includes writing reports, explaining data, or asking folks to do simple math.

Cost: $1,200

This 1.5-hour session takes the basics of plain language to a new level through the addition of visual elements, such as images, graphics, and other design features. We’ll share strategies for using visual elements to increase readability and help readers understand new or complex information.

This training is best for: folks who are already familiar with plain language strategies and want to include more thoughtful and effective visual elements in their communications.

Cost: $1,400

This 1.5-hour session builds on the basics of plain language to help participants think about what welcoming and safe content looks like in practice. We’ll introduce the principles of Trauma-Informed Design and explore how they apply to communication. We’ll share tools to help make your content accessible to folks with disabilities.

This training is best for: folks who are already familiar with plain language strategies and are looking to improve Accessibility and inclusivity in their communications.

Cost: $1,400

Plain language in context: hands-on workshops

These trainings are:

90+ minutes of hands-on learning
Virtual meetings or in-person workshops
Limited to 24 participants per group

We limit these workshops to 24 participants to make sure everyone can practice and get feedback. If you have a larger group, we offer a discount up to 20% when you schedule multiple trainings.

This 2-hour workshop builds on the basics of plain language to give participants practical experience evaluating and revising written content. Together we’ll identify opportunities to improve sample texts and work in groups to apply plain language strategies.

This training is best for: folks who are already familiar with plain language strategies and are eager to get hands-on practice in a supportive environment.

Cost: $1,700

This 2-hour workshop builds on the basics of plain language in spoken communication. We’ll use video examples and role playing activities to practice explaining ideas clearly and checking for understanding.

This training is best for: folks who are already familiar with how to apply plain language strategies to spoken information and are looking for practice and feedback in a supportive environment.

Cost: $1,700

This 2-hour workshop takes writing about numbers to the next level. Participants will work together to evaluate sample texts, and practice applying strategies to make numbers clearer and more usable for their audience.

This training is best for: folks who are already familiar with strategies for writing about numbers and are eager to get hands-on practice and feedback in a supportive environment.

Cost: $1,700

This 1.5 workshop is designed to offer hands-on practice applying plain language strategies to specific mediums. If you routinely create content in the same medium or are preparing for a larger project, this training is designed to help participants get the most out of a specific medium.
