Compensation: $19-22/hour, depending on experience
Schedule: Part-time; flexible schedule (16-24 hours per week)

Literacy Works’ mission is to advance equity by promoting literacy education and the use of clear language through our Community Literacy and Clear Language Lab programs.


In our Clear Language Lab, we believe that clear, understandable, humanizing communication should be the norm in non-profit and government communication. We work to make communication more accessible and push back against white dominant, patriarchal, and heteronormative standards that are too often the status quo of government and nonprofit communication. Through consulting and training services, we share expertise in clear communication practices to mission-based organizations in such fields as healthcare, legal aid, human services, and beyond. We also consider it vital to center people with lived expertise in our work and regularly work closely with community members on projects.


About the Position
Literacy Works is seeking a creative and self-directed professional who is passionate about communication and social justice.
The Program Manager is a part-time role that supports the Clear Language Lab program at Literacy Works. This person will assist with plain language training, materials review, focus groups, outreach, and communications, and will work primarily with non-profits, government entities, and other mission-driven organizations to make their content more accessible, clear, and understandable.
Key Responsibilities

  • Support annual goals and vision of the Clear Language Lab and represent Literacy Works with stakeholders, funders, community members, and other constituents

  • Assist with program administration of the Clear Language Lab at Literacy Works, including nurturing partnerships with community organizations, clients, and potential clients, as well as record keeping and grants management

  • Assist with various phases of projects from initial conversations to project implementation to conclusion

  • Support regular in-house programming schedule of activities, gratis and fee for service as well as tailored trainings

  • Assist with creating curricula, materials, and webinars as needed

  • Assist with materials review projects to re-develop or create materials using the principles of plain language

  • Integrate community members with lived experience into projects through focus groups, interviews, etc.

  • Stay apprised of current trends and research, both locally and nationally, in order to help inform program outcomes

  • Assist with communication needs including but not limited to social media, blog posts, newsletters, or other marketing efforts



  • Knowledge in english, communications, sociology, linguistics, disability studies or other related fields preferred

  • Familiarity with the needs of adult education students, English Language Learners, neurodivergent folx, or other populations that have been marginalized by traditional systems

  • One to three years of experience in adult education, communication, or a related field

  • Outstanding writing, creative communication, and organizational abilities

  • Strong project management skills and excellent attention to detail

  • Proven ability to work under deadlines and to maintain close adherence to schedules

  • A proactive, visionary, and independent work style

  • Positive outgoing personality; ability to work closely with small staff 

  • Eagerness to network on behalf of Literacy Works, Clear Language Lab and the field of adult literacy

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, Google apps, and social media; experience with Constant Contact, Canva, and Wix a plus
