Coauthored with Dr. Ralph Hruban, the book chronicles ten men and women who battled sexism, racism, or their own personal demons to make medicine a modern science. Today, we take it for granted that the treatments our doctors prescribe are based on research and evidence. But for the longest time, medicine in the United States was mired in folk wisdom, ancient ideas about mysterious bodily fluids, and just plain quackery.
