Plain Language coaching

What do we offer?

We offer 1:1 or small group plain language coaching sessions. We review your document in advance and come to our meeting prepared to discuss our key observations and the questions you would like to explore.

Why sign up for plain language coaching?

Maybe you work solo or in a small group and you want someone to collaborate with on your communication materials. Maybe you are new to plain language and looking for support applying strategies in a practical way. Maybe you just want to connect with another plain language enthusiast in a non-judgmental space.

Whatever your need, we are here to help.

How does coaching work?

1. Complete the registration form below. We offer a variety of sliding scale options.

2. Once you complete the registration form, you will get an email, and you can choose an appointment time.

3. Please send materials to review (or an excerpt) to sarah@litworks.org at least 2 business days before the scheduled meeting. Provide a sentence or two description of the document, the intended audience, and the overall purpose.

4. After the meeting, we will follow-up with a brief summary of what we covered, examples we discussed, and additional resources.

Common questions about coaching

What type of feedback do you provide?

We're not here to critique your work. Our feedback focuses on: • explaining words that might be confusing or new for your audience • using design features that make content easier to read, like headings and empty space • identifying sentences and paragraphs that could be shorter or clearer • highlighting ways to make your materials more accessible for people with disabilities

What materials should I use for a coaching session?

This session is for you. Choose what's going to be most helpful for your work. There are a couple of things to keep in mind: 1. Use something you have the authority to change. 2. We only have an hour, so if your document is multiple pages, choose an excerpt to focus on. In the past, people have brought: ✓ Program flyers and brochures ✓ Forms and surveys ✓ Presentation slides ✓ Educational handouts ✓ Email templates

What format should my materials be in?

Your materials can be in any format. We have access to Canva, Google suite, Adobe Pro, and Microsoft Office. It's easiest if you can share an editable file, but that's not required.

What if I want to meet about materials I haven't made yet?

That's great! We can use this time to brainstorm and plan together. You should still email Sarah what you want to make and any versions or ideas you already have. It's ok if it's just a draft!
