Reading with Commonlit.org
I explore the joys of commonlit.org and show you how you can create an account and share the great resources with your ABE or Advanced ESL student. These texts, the comprehension and discussion questions align well with the GED and other HSE tests. You must have an .edu email address to get a free account, but there are plenty of resources available (for FREE) even if you don't have one.
How are you, tutors?
Just checking in on you, tutors. In this video, I'll share some great resources for taking care of yourself including applying for unemployment, meditation apps, and COVID-19 details in many languages. I mention the meditations and work of Tara Brach in the video -- please visit her site for more information: https://www.tarabrach.com/
In this video, I'll go over some of the activities you can do with your student to prepare for their Citizenship Interview. I offer activities that can be adapted to the mode of communication you're using - texting, email, phone, or video chat. Do note that USCIS is closed and all appointments are postponed. But we can still practice while we wait. Please do not give legal advice to your student regarding their citizenship status unless you are actually trained in this subject. If you or your student need legal questions answered you can try the National Justice Immigration Center (NIJC). They are very hard to get ahold of on a normal day so it might be difficult but they are an option: 312-660-1370.

I discuss lesson structure and share plenty of resources to give you lots of ideas. In the video, I note that I have posted materials related to the census and how to use that in your lessons - please refer to our resource page (litworks.org) and scroll down to Census Materials to access those.

Let's Complete the Census Together
I answer the most asked questions about the census. Then I actually open my census letter and complete it online -- no practice, just live to tape! Remind yourself and your participants to complete the census! Get at me with your questions - I'm stuck at home and I'm in love with the census so let's chat. Go here if you have more questions -- great place for answers and to see what is happening in Illinois -- http://ilcountmein2020.org/ sample census questionnaire: https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/decennial-census/technical-documentation/questionnaires/2020.html how to verify if the letter, census taker, or postcard is really from the census bureau: https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/surveyhelp/verify-a-survey.html Check our resources page for my presentation on the census and lesson plan ideas for completing the census with adult learners. And don't forget to complete your census too!
Reading with Your Kids
Did you know Literacy Works also has a parent-child reading program called OK Learn? Well, we do and I'm excited to share some of those resources with you in this video. I discuss the lesson "Moving through Reading" based on the book From Head to Toe by Eric Carle. I know that you may not have that book handy but I found a nice video read-along of this book. Please find that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOIx72g0UdA
Mathing with Your Kids
In this video we'll be focusing on the principles of a good math foundation - sorting! This workshop is based on the book First 100 Numbers by Roger Priddy. I said in the video that I couldn't find a read-along version but I found one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKUFuS1cAbk. Count everything in your house and all the plants during your brief outside time today!
