OK Learn
Literacy Works' OK Learn workshops help parents encourage their young children to become strong readers and eager learners. OK Learn workshops take place at literacy programs and organizations serving low-income adults and families. They may be presented as single sessions or as a regular series that extends for a year or more. WHAT HAPPENS IN OK LEARN? Adults with low literacy skills often lack confidence in helping their children learn. Through OK Learn workshops, adults discover the many ways they can use conversation, books, and simple activities to spark their children's desire to learn and help them develop a love of reading. During follow-up parent-child activities, adults try the simple techniques with their children -- with rewarding results. One parent wrote, The information I get is very useful and helps me when it comes to my son learning and me being a better parent. In many households, a grandparent or aunt serves as a primary caregiver. Regarding OK Learn workshops, an aunt wrote, My niece and I are doing a lot more reading and writing these days instead of watching TV all the time. OK Learn workshops help parents integrate reading and writing into their children's lives. The workshops first got me to draw with my son, wrote one parent. Another summed up her experience with OK Learn: I love to learn more about things when it comes to my baby boy. He loves when I show him new things from the program!
